The Act of Free Falling presents four very different types of poems. Each may appeal to a particular type of reader, although their variety may enable a wide spectrum of poetry lovers to choose works from this volume to precisely match their mood. One group of these poems is about animals, nearly all in metered rhyme. These poems are likely to appeal to the kind of reader who enjoys a strong sense of rhythm in his or her poetry. Another section is devoted to poetry about the seasons and how the poet is affected by them. Nonsense poems, mostly in rhyme, make up another section. These examples of light verse are likely to appeal to readers in a lighthearted mood, who are ready to hear the poet play with words. A final section employs a more serious tone to discuss matters related to the later stages of a poet's life, as well as to some of his earlier experiences. These are often solemn in tone, though not necessarily dark or heavy. These are deeply felt and finely expressed works. Readers who enjoy thoughtful and vividly communicated poetry will certainly enjoy them.
