there are several key motivations for publication of this volume. firstly, continuous media streaming systems, like todays world-wide-web, will be a key component in the future information infrastructure. this evolution from static text and images to motion video and streaming audio is no different from the evolution from newspaper to tv and radio. what is needed is the technology to build such continuous media systems for the mass not hundreds but millions of end users. secondly, continuous media systems are a relatively new technology area, with only a decade of research. thus it is no surprise that there is currently no book available that comprehensively covers the area in general, and the two key challenges, namely scalability and reliability, in particular. thirdly, the author has been involved in research into continuous media systems since 1995. throughout this process a number of continuous media streaming systems have been designed and developed. this includes a video streaming system, a parallel video server that is fault tolerant (among the first in the world) and a number of multicast based video streaming systems. this has led to many publications in leading journals and conferences as well as four us patents (two granted, two pending). some of the developed technologies have been commercialised into products. there is currently a space in the market for a book which has been written by those behind the research into continuous media streaming systems and offers a highly focused look at architecture, design, analysis and implementation.
