Ich nenne das Buch eine Biographie, weil diese Stadt wie alle, die den Namen verdienen und nicht blo e Häuseransammlungen sind, mir wirklich ein lebendiges Wesen ist. [..] Deshalb ist es wichtig, dass die Deutschen Potsdam richtig kennen. Das ist sicher nicht der Fall gewesen. [...] Freilich gibt es nichts Verfehlteres als nun den preu ischen Stil zum deutschen machen zu wollen. Das predigt heute dieser und jener, der sich früher um alle anderen Stile gekümmert hat, nur nicht um diesen. Wir, die wir ihn seit je empfunden haben, in seine Kraft und seinen Schranken, wir glauben nicht, dass er für Menschen anderer Art erreichbar ist. Wir nehmen ihn als Einzelfall, als unseren Fall, den man verstehen und achten soll, der neben anderen sein recht hat, aber sich nicht über sie erheben, sie nicht ausschlie en will. Nein, Potsdam stellt nicht Deutschland dar. Fritz Stahl. I call this book a biography because this city, like all cities who deserve the name and are not just a collection of houses, is really a living being to me. [...] Hence, it is important that Germans know Potsdam well. This has certainly not been the case. [...] Of course, one cannot be more mistaken if one tries to declare the Prussian style as German. Those who advocate that today used to concern themselves with all other styles, just not this one. We who have always recognized it, in its strength and limitations, do not believe that it is within the reach of other people. We regard it as a unique case, as our case, which one should understand and respect, which has its rightful place alongside others, but does not want to rise above them, does not want to exclude them.
