Hillary Clinton changed course from stressing policy initiatives to attacking Trump as unfit to be President. Instead of following Michelle Obama's dictum of, "When they go low, we go high," the 2016 campaigns super-charged the trend of hyper-partisanship and toxic politics. But the 2020 mid-term election results may be evidence that US voters want to reverse that trend. "Polarized! in the Time of Trump" provides a historical perspective of political polarization in the US. Truth and decency are not new victims in US politics. Trump's Twitter storms and attacks against the media are current versions of an old playbook. American icons such as Alexander Hamilton, Andrew Jackson, and Abraham Lincoln engaged in dirty tricks comparable to Richard Nixon's. But Jeff Rasley makes the case with expert testimony and statistical data that social media is the most dangerous weapon ever used to mislead voters with fake news and to intensify ideological extremism and political polarization.
