That was a big temple built before hundred years ago. Babu's father would always tell his children the pride and glory of the temple. The temple had immensely tall ceilings and vast corridors. There would be beautiful carvings on its walls depicting stories from ancient epics. The majestic look of the temple and its grandeur would inspire them always. The inside of the temple would always be cool, even at the height of summer! In the courtyard at the front on one side there would be soft sand spread evenly. The children would play there happily. Even if they were to fall, the soft sand would not wound them!. Cool breeze would be blowing always! The children would feel refreshed and enthused, spending time there. At the back side of the temple there would be a river flowing with a sweet music of its own!Above all, there would be an elephant standing, tied to a tree on one corner of the outer courtyard! In front of that there would be sugarcanes, coconuts, leaves of all kinds, bananas etc. would lie in huge heaps. The way the elephant would stretch its trunk and pick up those eatables, one by one, or in bunches and put them into its mouth would be a treat to watch. And, there would be children and adults standing at the place, watching the elephant eating! In the morning as well as in the evening the temple priest would bring cooked rice in a huge plate. The care-taker of the elephant would prepare big balls of rice and offer the elephant one by one. To watch this spectacular scene there would be a huge crowd everyday!During weekends and other holidays Babu and his friends would visit the temple without fail!. If possible they would visit both morning and evening - if not, at least in the evening they would go there. Once, long back when they were taken to the zoo they could see two or three elephants. But, at that time they were in a hurry to return. But, here, they could leisurely watch the elephant's movements and majestic look!. Its gigantic body, long silvery tusks, shining honey-brown colour would give them a lot of joy to look at. Babu, Sasi, Saravanan, Alli, Muthu, Kumar, Krithiga, Shanthi, Saravanan, Valli, Shanmugam, Valli, Vinodh, Chella - all of them were very much eager to show their dear little elephant Appu to Mylee."This is our dear elephant Mylee. It is the pride and glory of our place, you know. My father says that this temple is hundred years old and that this elephant has come here before several years. We all - children as well as elders of our village love and respect this elephant a great deal. We would never throw even a small stone at it. "
