Samantha Rose Johnson is a tough, cynical, but law-school educated, licensed private detective working in Elgin, Illinois. From growing up biracial in the tough South Sangamon neighborhood of Chicago in the seventies, to a tour with the United States Army Military Police Corps where she completed Air Assault training, Sam knows what life can throw at you. Sam's contentious relationship with her mother, combined with the news that her sometimes-lover met someone he intends to marry, leaves Sam vulnerable to her own devices. While working at the club, she meets an attractive woman, and, despite her usual rules about one night stands, she makes a decision she may come to regret.
