After being forced from previous locations, over 26,000 Mormons built the City of Nauvoo on what was originally a piece of swampy land. As the Mormons prospered as a result of their hard work and dedication, the resentment of less successful Non-Mormon increased. Eventually, this resentment leads to the persecution, harassment, murder and the assassination of Mormons. They were executed and their homes torched. Finally, the Mormons were forced to Exodus in mass westward to Salt Lake Valley. Thousands of Mormons died of starvation and freezing to death during the long and arduous foot march to Zion, the promised land.
