Their two cousins, from Rome, pursue them overland in an effort to set them free. The boys from Rome are led by the "Black Prince", a member of the Royal Family of Kush. The book chronicles the experiences each boy has as they pass through cities of unimaginable beauty and unusual customs and places with exotic animals and mythological creatures. They are exposed to dangers and treachery, as well as both "White" and "Black" Magic. Why have they been kidnapped? Who is behind the plot? Is it just court politics? Or is there something more?
