He had chosen to spend a couple of hibernating days while staying with his mistress Carrie Fulton Phillip wife of a business associate of Harding on a ship berthed in San Frisco. Scalise and Anselmi two of Al Capone gunmen boarded the vessel and administered the poison. The gunmen were slain to keep them silent.
