As we start the 21st century, have we learned from history or will we continue to make the same mistakes? The Marine Corps had to prove that it is postured as "America's force in readiness" not only for the next conflict but also for the next 15 to 20 years. Historically, force reductions have been more of a knee jerk reaction with across the board cuts based on a number, but the right sized force will reduce the quantity while maintaining or perhaps even enhancing quality. Instead, the reduction must be done responsibly, while maintaining necessary capabilities vital to our national defense. This is a generation of leaders looking beyond their service and working together to jointly meet the challenges of the uncertain future. The 21st century has changed dramatically and when defense resources are limited and security demands increase, the solution is a balanced force across the military services, interagency participation and international partnership to ensure security and prosperity across the globe.
